If you go to services it says print spooler is off - clicking start gives error I do not know exactly when this started but it has been several days since I tried to print until yesterday.
The spooler simply is gone! There was a windows update on Dec 21 - a security update - I can't uninstall that update because when I click on installed updates it's not there but it WAS installed. Monday, February 11, PM. I just got a call from a small company and noticed that there was a similar challenges. Windows 7 machine's Print Spooler was stopped all printers disappeared - Restarting works, but it did stop quite soon again in about 10 seconds or so The problem started after some automatic windows updates - I checked through all your very good ideas, but they didn't help - Finally I had to do the restore to the time before those windows updates.
Now it's time to solve which one it was. Or was there something going on at the same time which caused the windowsupdate cause this challenge. And by reinstalling those very same Windows updates no problems What is the real cause and how this challenge can be avoid?
Thursday, February 14, AM. Same problem here: Sony Vaio laptop, Windows 7 Pro 64 factory installed. Symptom: After a recent Windows update: no printers listed, print spooler service is not running, manual restart of spooler service fails error Workaround: system restore to early January, reboot, print spooler and printer works - until the next automatic update - I've done this twice so far. I have tried the print spooler action but when I double click the Print Spooler file the "stop" button is greyed out, the service status says "stopped" but when I press start i get an error message "Windows could not start the print spooler serviceon the local computer.
Error The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion" I have just recieved an International phone call from a woman with an Indian accent saying that she was from Windows not Microsoft and that I had Windows issues and could I switch my computer on. Is this genuine. How did she get my phone number? I asked her to email me so that I could check if she was genuine and I was expecting a reply on this forum to prove it.

Did you also try "print directly to printer" bypassing the spooler. Granted that can tie things up during the transmission of the document to the printer, but it may help determine where the issue lies.
